Raising the profile and insights indigenous peoples as leaders of nature conservation

About this campaign

Indigenous leadership in nature conservation is indispensable for addressing societal challenges such as upholding indigenous rights, climate change, land degradation and food security.

This campaign shares messages from IUCN’s Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation members on the role of indigenous leadership and governance for stewarding and defending nature. Members call upon the global community to support the World Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nature, hosted at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, which will create a space for indigenous peoples to raise their voices, reaffirm their rights and present their proposals as stewards of nature.

From June until November, Stewarding the Earth launches new periodic video messages and calls to action from IUCN's Indigenous Peoples Organisation Members.

About the World Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nature

The Summit will present the results of collaborative planning led by IUCN Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation members to develop a Global Indigenous Agenda for the Governance of Indigenous Lands, Territories and Natural Resources and call on the global community to play supportive and enabling roles.

From the landmark creation of an Indigenous Peoples Organisation membership category in 2016’s Congress to this year’s Indigenous Agena.

2016

Supporting self-determination

At Hawai'i, in a landmark decision, IUCN Members revised its membership for the first time in IUCN’s history, voting to create an Indigenous Peoples Organisation (IPO) Membership category. It also established an Indigenous Councillor, which has been appointed to IUCN’s Council.

2017

Amplifying Indigenous leadership

For the first time, a representative from IUCN’s Indigenous Peoples Organisation Membership (and Commission member) gives the IUCN statement to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII).

2018

Defining priorities

IUCN’s Indigenous Peoples Organisations meet and define a self-determined strategy to define joint priorities for advancing indigenous rights and issues in conservation and within IUCN.

2019

Building collaborations

IUCN Indigenous Peoples Organisation Members and Forest Farm Facility members develop capacities and share knowledge on global policy, conservation finance and how global frameworks for conserved and protected areas relate to indigenous rights.

2020

Investing in Indigenous-led solutions

IUCN and Conservation International begin a partnership, working on an upcoming Global Environment Facility project called the Inclusive Conservation Initiative.

2021

Crafting an Indigenous-led Agenda

Right now, IUCN's Indigenous Peoples Organisation Members are holding regional meetings and forums in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and North America to craft a Global Indigenous Agenda for the Governance of Indigenous Lands, Territories and Natural Resources, which will be launched at the Summit preceding the IUCN World Conservation Congress in September.
